Swim shorts with a built-in liner instead of mesh

Swim shorts with a built-in liner have an inner layer that replaces traditional mesh lining. If mesh feels rough or uncomfortable, a soft liner may be an alternative. But without mesh does not tell the whole story: some swim shorts use a different lining, while others are completely unlined.

What is a built-in swim shorts liner?

The liner sits next to your body, inside the outer shorts. It is intended to provide coverage and support while swimming and moving. Its fit, leg length and fabric feel vary between designs. Check the inside of the shorts as carefully as the outside.

In Haget swimwear, the AquaFlex™ liner replaces traditional mesh. It comes in both Haget Swim Trunks with a 5 inch inseam and Haget Swim Shorts with a 7 inch inseam. These lengths describe the outer shorts, not the legs of the liner.

Swim shorts without mesh: lined or unlined?

  • With a built-in liner: a different inner layer takes the place of mesh. Check its fit, seams and leg openings.
  • Unlined: the outer fabric has no separate inner layer. Check the coverage and decide whether you want a separate garment designed for swimming underneath.

If you want to avoid the feel of mesh while keeping built-in support, shorts with an alternative liner are a useful place to start.

Can a liner help with chafing?

A soft liner may feel more comfortable if mesh texture or edges irritate your skin. Chafing also depends on fit, seams, moisture, sand and movement, so changing the lining cannot guarantee that it will never happen.

Walk, sit down and bend your legs when trying shorts on. The liner should feel comfortable without pulling at the crotch, riding up or pinching at the leg openings. The outer shorts should leave room to move. A fit that only works when you stand still is unlikely to suit a full day by the water.

Do you need underwear under swim shorts with a liner?

You normally do not need an extra layer if the built-in liner provides the coverage and support you want. Everyday underwear is not designed for swimming and may add fabric, moisture and seams. If you prefer a separate layer, choose swim-specific underwear and check that the combination does not feel too tight.

How to choose a pair

  1. Start with the inside. Check the lining and seams as well as the colour and outer fabric.
  2. Choose your preferred length. Shorter legs show more thigh; longer legs provide more coverage.
  3. Use the size guide. Both the waistband and liner need to fit. Tightening the drawstring is not a complete solution for shorts that are too large.
  4. Think beyond the swim. Drying depends on the outer fabric, lining and conditions. More fabric does not automatically mean faster drying.

Haget swim shorts with AquaFlex™

Both Haget designs have an AquaFlex™ liner, four-way stretch, an elasticated waist with a drawstring, side pockets and a zipped back pocket. Choose Haget Swim Trunks, 5 inch, for a shorter cut or Haget Swim Shorts, 7 inch, for more leg coverage. Each product page includes its own size guide.

Frequently asked questions

Does no mesh mean no liner?

No. The mesh may have been replaced with a different built-in liner. Read the product description to check whether a pair is lined or completely unlined.

Is a built-in liner the same as compression shorts?

No. A built-in liner is not automatically a compression garment. Haget describes AquaFlex™ as a liner, which does not imply medical or measured compression.

What inseam lengths does Haget offer?

Swim Trunks have a 5 inch inseam and Swim Shorts have a 7 inch inseam, a difference of about 5 cm. Check the garment measurements in the relevant size guide too.
